For your consideration is this wonderful copy of THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER A Tale For Young People of All Ages by MARK TWAIN
with one hundred and ninety-two illustrations published by CHARLES L. WEBSTER AND COMPANY 1891. Copyright, 1881 by S.L.CLEMENS Press Of JENKINS & McCOWAN, 224-228 Centre St., New York. Dedication page reads: To Those Good-Mannered And Agreeable Children, SUSIE AND CLARA CLEMENS, This Book Is Affectionately Inscribed by Their Father.
The book is complete with 411 pages followed by other Standard Publications issued by Chas.L. Webster & Co. 67 Fifth Avenue, New York. Also listed are the prices. For example, The Prince and the Pauper is advertised as: A square 8vo volume of 411 pages. Beautifully Illustrated. Sheep, $3.75; Cloth $3.00.
I must agree that 192 black & white illustrations are very beautiful. The book binding is solid. The pages have darkened over time. No foxing or torn pages, only a tiny notch missing from the bottom of the chapter page 345. (Please see photos). The dark green cover is in good condition with normal scuffs and wear to some edges and the corners. Raised designs of a crown, lion & other symbols of nobility and incised title. I believe at one time there was gold guilding on the cover which is all but worn away. The book is pressed a little to the right which has improved since it was rescued from the bottom of a heavy box of books.
Please note: I am not an expert in the field of antique books. ...
